Bio-Industry Veteran Chris Ryan Joins Gevo
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – June 15, 2009 – Gevo, Inc. announced today that Dr. Chris Ryan has joined the company as Vice President of Business Development–Downstream. In this role, Ryan will be responsible for business development in converting isobutanol into chemicals, jet fuel, gasoline, diesel, and fuel blendstocks.

Ryan comes to Gevo with more than 15 years of strategic leadership, business development, research and product development in bio-based materials. Most recently, Ryan served as chief operating officer and chief technology officer for NatureWorks LLC. As a founding member of NatureWorks, Ryan was involved in the development and commercialization of the company’s new bio-based polymer from lab scale production through the introduction and growth of PLA through its $300 million world-scale production facility.

Ryan holds a master’s degree in management from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management, a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Minnesota, and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Gustavus Adolphus College.

“Chris’s background is perfectly suited to what we need here at Gevo—since our targets cut across chemicals, materials, and fuels,” stated Dr. Patrick Gruber, CEO of Gevo. “I like that Chris has ‘been there, done it’ in commercializing biobased products.

“Our technology for making low-cost building blocks can be used to produce materials such as the plastic for flat-screen TVs and computers, PETE for packaging and fibers, as well as renewable hydrocarbons like isooctene and isooctane for the gasoline market, and renewable jet fuel and renewable diesel blendstocks,” continued Gruber. “Our approach is to retrofit existing ethanol plants to produce more valuable products for the chemical and fuels industries. We have the ability to deliver hydrocarbons from renewables at costs lower than they can be made from oil. We like that a lot.”
